A 27-year-old Thunder Bay man has been charged after police stopped a vehicle that was speeding in a construction zone early Thursday morning. The incident took place just after 3 a.m. on July 30, Ontario Provincial Police said on social media. “A member of Thunder Bay OPP was conducting speed enforcement on Highway 61, in the active construction zone,” police said. “There were a significant number of workers and pieces of equipment at this construction zone. A northbound Honda Civic was stopped travelling 105km/h in the posted 70km/h construction zone.” Phone showed YouTube video When police stopped the vehicle and spoke with the driver, “the officer observed a cellphone in the centre console, with a YouTube video on the unlocked screen, visible to the driver,” police said. The man was charged with speeding in a construction zone and using a cellphone while driving. “A reminder that speeding fines can be doubled in construction zones,” police said. “A distracted driving charge comes with a $615 fine, three demerit points and a three-day licence suspension upon conviction.”
