Temperatures will ramp up over the coming days with afternoon highs in the mid 20s today, upper 20s Friday and near 30 C on Saturday. But, we’ll get an abrupt end to that warming trend on Sunday. An upper ridge pushes up over Alberta for the next few days and that should keep the Edmonton region and areas to the south fairly dry. I’ve left a slight risk of a shower or thunderstorm in the forecast for overnight tonight. But, it looks like that precipitation will pass north of the city. We’re expecting some thunderstorms to develop in the Peace Country late this afternoon. Those will push east through the Slave Lake area tonight and into northeastern Alberta by early Friday morning. The ridge starts to push off to the east on Saturday as an upper low sweeps in from the northwest. That’ll put Edmonton and surrounding regions in the storm track once again. After a day of heat on Saturday, watch for potentially severe storms to develop in north-central Alberta late Saturday. A deep area of low pressure will sit over eastern Alberta on Sunday bringing gusty wind and heavy, steady rain to parts of Alberta. The heaviest rain will probably be in Lloydminster to Cold Lake areas. Some of that region could see 50-100 millimetres of rain Sunday. There’s a good chance that Edmonton will see a solid 20-40 mm soaking. That could be enough to produce some localized flooding once again, given how saturated the ground is. We’ll also see temperatures drop from near 30 C on Saturday to a high in the mid to upper teens on Sunday with gusts in the 50-60 km/h range. Monday’s shaping up drier and a bit warmer.
