SAANICH - The District of Saanich says it has disabled Spector 360 from all workplace computers, including the one in Mayor Richard Atwell's office, saying the issue of computer security has become a distraction.
In a statement distributed Monday, District CAO Andy Laidlaw informed media that the security software was removed from all municipal computers January 20.
He stated the district may revisit the issue of Spector 360 and other security measures after the privacy commissioner has given them guidance this spring.
The privacy commissioner became involved after the newly elected mayor went public, saying Spector 360 was installed on his computer to track his digital life, without his knowledge.
Laidlaw stated "This issue has become a distraction for Mayor and Council from its primary role in providing governance and service to their taxpayers."
Saanich says it hopes removing the software will bring some closure.
