Stepping up: Regina residents walk in red heels for YWCA fundraiser

Regina residents might have noticed hundreds of people struggling to walk around Victoria Park on Thursday, but rest assured, they were all “stepping up” for a good cause.

The Regina YWCA held its 10th annual “Walk a Mile in Their Shoes” event to raise awareness and money for gender-based violence.

Most people wore red high-heeled shoes, a challenge for many people, especially most men — to walk in.

The struggle showed participants what it might feel like to walk a mile in women’s shoes and served to draw attention to the struggles women face with domestic violence.

“Walk a Mile is an awareness and fundraising campaign where we focus on eliminating and talking about family homelessness that is the result of gender-based violence,” said Alexis Losie with YWCA Regina.

Thirty teams participated in Thursday’s fundraising event, with a total of about 500 people out strutting — or in some cases — stumbling around Victoria Park. Among those in attendance were Regina Fire Chief Layne Jackson.

The event raised nearly $150,000 for the Isabelle Johnson Shelter.
