Dozens of people gathered at Regina’s Atlas Hotel on Saturday to celebrate The King’s Birthday Luncheon. Hosted by The Monarchist League of Canada - South Saskatchewan Branch, the event featured former Canadian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Ralph Goodale, who was invited to speak about King Charles III. “King Charles has worked really hard to put his own stamp on the institution,” Goodale said. “I think in the last year, he has demonstrated the value of the monarchy system and the value of his particular role.” Goodale served as high commissioner from 2021 until the end of 2025, working on bilateral ties, security cooperation, and diplomatic relations. Working with King Charles III, he credits Charles’ work in Canadian sovereignty, especially his speech last May opening the first session of the 45th parliament of Canada. “That was obviously a clear message of support for Canada in relation to the friction between Canada and the United States, and it came at a very important moment,” Goodale said. “Just 10 days ago, when he was visiting the United States, there were shoutouts along the way, in favour of Canada.” Goodale also credits King Charles III with delivering messages about the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the defense of Ukraine, limitations on use of executive power and the rule of law and due process. “Only he would be able to deliver those lines effectively, so he is playing a very important global diplomatic role,” Goodale said. Goodale said King Charles III has been invited to Saskatchewan sometime this year for the 150th anniversary of the Treaty 6, signed originally in 1876 between First Nations and the Crown. In his speech, Goodale spoke about his time as Canadian high commissioner, and about the sovereignty of Canada and the importance of that in Canada’s relationship with the United States."
