City of Regina seeks input on Cathedral Safety Zone

The City of Regina has launched a survey to gather feedback on the Cathedral neighbourhood’s Community Safety Zone.

It was implemented by Regina city council in 2024 as part of the city’s Vision Zero road safety framework. As a result, the speed limit for Cathedral was lowered to 40 kilometres per hour from 50 km/h.

The survey’s results will be used to determine the success of the Community Safety Zone and could inform future decisions to expand to other neighbourhoods.

Traffic, enforcement and collision data will also be considered.

The Vision Zero framework aims to reduce the number of collisions for pedestrians, drivers and cyclists.

“The Cathedral neighbourhood was selected for a Safety Zone because it has a high volume of people walking and cycling and a unique mix of schools, daycares and commercial spaces,” said Chris Warren, director of transportation and roadways in a Wednesday news release.

“Now that the Safety Zone has been in place for just under two years, the City is seeking feedback from residents and businesses about the changes.”

The survey will be open from June 24 to July 15, 2026.

Between 2013 and 2023, Cathedral saw 1,689 collisions, 34 involving pedestrians, according to the city.

Of those collisions, 456 took place on 13th Avenue, including an incident that took the life of a 16-year-old Dendrae Thunder Lonechild in 2023.

Lonchild’s death was one of the incidents which sparked calls for improved traffic safety in the neighbourhood.
