Bird enthusiasts take to Saskatchewan Science Centre to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day

In celebration of World Migratory Bird Day, bird enthusiasts made their way to the Saskatchewan Science Centre, welcoming back the birds to Regina.

“It’s about getting everybody outside, connecting to nature,” said Lacey Weekes, Nature Saskatchewan’s conservation and education manager. “It’s not only good for their mental health, but it’s also good for nature itself. If you feel a connection to nature, you’re more likely wanting to protect it and to the future.”

This year’s theme was called “Every Bird Counts - Your Observations Matter,” where those will participate in recording bird numbers for community science databases which scientists and researchers can use in their work.

Two bird tours also took place, pointing out birds that have made their way back to the Saskatchewan ecosystem. Leaders Ryan Fisher and Shirley Bartz led the way, educating those on migration routes, dangers that birds run into on their migration journey, and why they chose the Saskatchewan habitat for nesting.

Two bird tours were held to point out different birds, talking about migration routes, some of the dangers the birds face in their migration journey, and why they choose this habitat for nesting.

Covered across the terrain were Canadian geese, along with their stool, with at least one dropping every half foot.

“This is a perfect habitat for geese, they’re protected here and there is very little predators in this area,” said Weekes. “Geese are choosing this area to raise their young and build their nest. They’re nesting right now, so they’re very protective of their babies. We want to make sure we’re giving them the space where they can feel comfortable and safe.”

According to Weekes, popular birds in the area are robins, yellow warblers, white-crowned sparrows, black-capped chickadee, and of course, the geese.
