Days after a deadly crash claimed the life of a motorcyclist on Vancouver Island’s most notorious highway, the B.C. government has confirmed a new median will be coming to the Malahat.
The province confirmed it is currently designing a nearly five-kilometre barrier running from Aspen Road to South Shawnigan Lake Road, linking two stretches of the highway that already have medians.
The news comes after another dangerous weekend on the stretch of Trans-Canada Highway that saw three crashes, one of them fatal.
A 40-year-old motorcyclist was killed on the highway near Aspen Road after crossing the centre line and hitting a southbound truck head-on.
Police said speed was likely a factor in the crash.
The day before, four people were sent to hospital after a crash near the Westshore Parkway – two in critical condition and two in stable condition.
Alcohol and erratic driving were both possible factors in that crash, according to police.
The government says planning and design of the median should be complete sometime in 2016.
B.C. has invested $33-million into the corridor since 2001 and says median barriers now divide more than half of the Malahat.
