First, a Liberal member of Parliament who survived a horrific car accident last fall, and who spent months travelling to and from Ottawa while quietly managing a serious concussion and the challenges that followed it, finally accepted that he could not keep doing both, and resigned. The second, the same MP is a fugitive from accountability caught voting from China and feeling public life behind a fabricated health crisis. The first story is true. It is documented in his own words and, sadly, in his medical reality. The second is false in every verifiable detail. Only one went viral. Chen has represented Scarborough North since 2015. In any normal world, his announcement is where the story ends. We would allow a man dealing with post-concussion syndrome the grace to handle his health in private, or at the very least with some dignity. We used to be capable of that. Instead, within hours, a corner of the internet decided it knew why he ‘really’ resigned. The viral story rests on a single artifact: a video of Chen in China, posted with a date stamp of March 23. There was a vote in the House of Commons that same week. Therefore, the theory concludes that Chen voted from China, was caught, and is now hiding behind a sympathetic health story. The theory has one problem. Chen was not in China on March 23. His trip ran from March 14 to 22, during a parliamentary break week, when there were no votes in the House of Commons. None. He travelled as part of a Canadian parliamentary delegation, and the trip was disclosed to the Office of the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner, which anyone with an internet connection can look up. An impossible conspiracy theory The paper trail is public. The dates are public. The House calendar is public. And a video’s posting date is not the date it was filmed, something anyone who has ever uploaded vacation photos a week late already understands. Every element of this conspiracy can be checked in under five minutes by anyone who wants the truth more than they want the story. And there is a detail every current and former parliamentarian who care about the truth would know without looking anything up: the House of Commons voting system does not permit members to vote from outside Canada, or even to participate in committee proceedings from abroad. The remote voting rules adopted for hybrid sittings require members to be on Canadian soil. The scenario at the heart of this conspiracy, an MP casting votes from China, is not merely undocumented. It is technically impossible. All Conservative MPs who amplified the claim have used that voting system. They know. You would think that would be the end of it. It was not because the truth was never the point. Some disclosure is in order here, because the distinction matters more than ever. I am partisan. I am not hyper-partisan. I spent years as a provincial and federal Liberal staffer, and I now run a business alongside conservatives whose judgment I trust. I have never believed that my political views excuse me from telling the difference between truth and lies no matter how partisan I want to be. That distinction, between having a team and abandoning reality for it, is the entire ballgame. It is exactly the distinction that collapsed in the days after Chen’s announcement. Elected officials amplify lie The influencers came first, accounts that have built audiences and, in some cases, livelihoods on the premise that every Liberal action conceals something sinister. They flooded social media with the video and the insinuation. Fringe outlets packaged it as journalism. Then, members of Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s caucus joined in. Saskatchewan MP Jeremy Patzer amplified the claim in a post he has since quietly deleted. Alberta MP John Barlow asserted that Chen had been in China in July, which he had not. Ontario MP Dean Allison demanded that Chen be investigated for taking a “reported” trip to China while claiming Ottawa expenses and voting in the House, a thing that did not happen. These are elected members of Parliament. They sit in the same chamber Chen was struggling to reach. They have access to the House calendar, to the ethics disclosures, and to their own House leader’s office. They chose the algorithm over the record. That choice deserves more attention than the conspiracy itself. Influencers who profit from outrage are beyond persuasion; that is their business model. Members of Parliament are supposed to be different. When an elected official amplifies a claim they could disprove with a single phone call, they are not misinformed. They are wagering that the engagement is worth more than the truth and that no one who matters will hold them to account. But the people who matter are watching, and they are precisely the voters the Conservative Party cannot form government without. The Conservative path to power does not run through the replies from anonymous accounts. It runs through the suburbs of Toronto and Vancouver, through ridings very much like Scarborough North, and through communities of new Canadians who came to this country for stability and fairness and whose votes are genuinely up for grabs. The cost of veiled racism Consider what this episode tells them. A Chinese-Canadian MP takes a disclosed trip to China, suffers a car accident, resigns for his health, and the instinct of sitting Conservative MPs is to insinuate, without checking a single public record, that he is a liar with divided loyalties. Chinese-Canadian families have seen that film before. So has every immigrant community that has watched a routine trip home be recast as evidence of disloyalty. They will remember who wrote the script. Let us also be honest about what the insinuation actually is. If Conservative MPs have concerns about Canada’s relationship with China, about foreign interference, or about parliamentary travel to Beijing, those are serious subjects that deserve serious debate, and I will happily have it. But that is not what happened here. What happened is that a Chinese-Canadian MP travelled to China as part of a disclosed Canadian parliamentary delegation, and elected officials chose to imply, with no evidence, that he must have been up to something more. Strip away the date stamp and the hashtags, and the argument underneath is that this MP’s heritage makes his loyalty conditional. There is a word for that, and ‘accountability’ is not it. It is veiled racism, and the fact that it arrives dressed up as a question does not change what it is. This is the deeper cost, and it should trouble thoughtful Conservatives most of all. Each time the party chases the quick reward of the fever swamp, it tells moderate, suburban, and diaspora voters what it would be like in government: not curious, not careful, not fair. Those voters are not asking Conservatives to stop being conservative. They are asking them to be serious. A party that cannot resist a fake storyline is showing the country how it would weigh evidence in a real crisis. A good week of engagement is a poor trade for the seats where Conservative majorities are actually built. None of this is an argument for polite politics. Hard questions about MPs’ travel, foreign influence, and attendance are legitimate. I have asked plenty of them myself, of both parties, and if Chen’s trip had overlapped with a vote, that would have been a fair story Liberals would have had to answer. But it did not, and the people pushing the claim either know that or don’t care to find out. Shaun Chen gave his community more than 20 years, first as a school board trustee and then as its member of Parliament. He is leaving Ottawa to no longer have a weekly four-hour commute. The record is public. The conspiracy is false. And the people who spread it, including those with seats in the House of Commons, owe him something this country should still be capable of giving: the grace to be human, and an apology.
