Two people have been charged following an incident Aug. 14 in Wiikwemkoong in which two people were forcibly confined and attacked. In a news release, the Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service said three residences have been searched in connection with the incident. Police responded Friday to a residence on Daawema Road. Victims taken to hospital “A male and female were located with significant injuries,” police said. “Both were transported to hospital and later released.” Chief Ron Gignac said this type of violence “has no place in our Territory. “The Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service will not tolerate acts that threaten the safety and well-being of our residents,” Gignac said in the news release. “We remain committed to holding those responsible accountable and ensuring our community remains safe.” A 28-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman, both from Wiikwemkoong, were arrested Aug. 15 and charged with forcible confinement, assault with a weapon, possession of an imitation weapon for a dangerous purpose, aggravated assault and making death threats. Search warrants were subsequently executed at residences on Daawema Road, Hills Trail and Mshaboos Lane with assistance from OPP Forensic Identification Services. “The investigation remains ongoing and additional charges may be laid,” police said. Both suspects remain in custody ahead of a bail hearing.
