PM Carney travelling north to attend Inuit–Crown partnership meeting

MONTREAL – Prime Minister Mark Carney is travelling to Kujjuaq, Que., on Tuesday to attend a meeting of the Inuit–Crown Partnership Committee.

On the agenda for the gathering of elected Inuit and federal government officials in northern Quebec: Arctic sovereignty and affordability in Canada’s North.

Also expected to be discussed at Tuesday’s meeting is Arctic foreign policy, food security, health and wellness, as well as ongoing plans to help build an Inuit Nunangat University.

Carney will hold a brief media availability upon landing in the largest community in the Nunavik region and then will deliver opening remarks at the Inuit–Crown Partnership Committee (ICPC) meeting. CTV News will be on the ground covering the prime minister’s visit.

The ICPC has been a permanent bilateral forum for engagement since the signing of the Inuit Nunangat Declaration in 2017. With a core focus on addressing systemic inequities and supporting Inuit prosperity, leaders meet three times a year to advance issues of shared importance and strengthen relations.

Once a year, the meeting is chaired by the prime minister, as well as the president of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK) – the national organization representing the 65,000 Inuit in Canada – and so it will be Carney, and IKT President Natan Obed leading Tuesday’s gathering.

According to the ITK, several cabinet ministers, as well as Inuit leadership from across the country, are also attending.

Past recent meetings between Inuit leadership and government officials have focused on the prime minister’s push to greenlight more major projects and how the Building Canada Act will be implemented in line with Inuit treaties; infrastructure gaps from northern housing to transportation; as well as Arctic defence and security.

Tuesday afternoon, before departing Kujjuaq, the prime minister is also expected to participate in a community event.
