Jasper expected to get additional $500M in wildfire relief from Ottawa

CTV News Edmonton has learned that Ottawa has earmarked additional funding for the Town of Jasper to the tune of about $500 million to support the town’s continued rebuild following a devastating wildfire in 2024.

Documents obtained by CTV News Edmonton said the additional funding will ensure critical infrastructure repairs are completed efficiently and that interim housing will continue to be provided for displaced residents.

The wildfire is estimated to have destroyed or damaged 20 per cent of the total assets in Jasper National Park, including campgrounds, staff housing, grounds, utility buildings, highways, and roadways.

A senior government official said funding will go towards rebuilding these assets while also reinforcing fire mitigation measures

Ottawa will also be easing restrictions for the town, reducing red tape and allowing for an easier rebuilding process, said the official.

Jasper National Park was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1984 and sees about 2.5-million visitors annually.
