A beloved tree in downtown Duncan will be cut down on Friday to make room for a parking lot.

The 'ancient' maple tree that sits on James Street in the Island Savings Centre lot had been deemed unsafe.

Officials said it posed a safety risk for anyone walking near it.

Protesters fought back saying the tree is centuries old and tried saving it by chaining themselves to the tree.

The Island Savings Centre Commission held a special meeting on July 26 and determined the tree would be removed on the morning of August 5.

The commission said in response to requests put forward by a group of advocates, the trunk, potentially a nursery log and a rooted shoot from the tree “will be incorporated into the new landscape with interpretive signage.”
