Campaign signs will begin popping up across the City of Ottawa today with the municipal election just over six weeks away. Candidates for mayor, city councillor and school board trustee are now allowed to install campaign signs on public and private property ahead of the Oct. 26 municipal election. Under the city’s Signs on City Roads Bylaw and the Temporary Signs on Private Property Bylaw, election signs must not be: According to the city, landlords of residential properties cannot prevent a tenant from displaying campaign signs on their rented premises. No condo corporations can prevent an owner or tenant from displaying campaign signs on their unit. “The landlord, person, condominium corporation or agent may set reasonable conditions on the size or type of sign that can be displayed. They can restrict signs from being displayed in common areas,” the city said on its website. The city reminds residents that interfering with or damaging election signs is a criminal offence under the Criminal Code of Canada. Candidates are asked to report incidents of vandalism or tampering to the Ottawa Police Service. All signs must be removed 72 hours after the Oct. 26 municipal election.
