Sault’s St. Vincent Place makes urgent appeal for soup donations

For the first time in its 22-year history, St. Vincent Place in Sault Ste. Marie has run out of canned soup.

St. Vincent Place in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., issued an urgent call to the community this past week for donations of canned soup, marking a first-time occurrence in the organization’s 22-year history. The non-profit, which operates a local food bank, found its soup shelves completely depleted, prompting a public appeal for support.

According to Sara McCleary, the marketing manager for St. Vincent Place, the severity of the shortage was highlighted by their longtime food bank coordinator.

“A few days ago, our food bank coordinator came to me – she’s been here for the full 22 years that St. Vincent Place has been opened – and she said, I think this is the first time this has ever happened, these soup shelves are empty,” McCleary said.

This recent shortage echoes a similar incident from last year, when the organization ran out of dried pasta for the first time.

McCleary noted that donation cycles are typically slower during the summer months, but the current situation is particularly acute.

“The summer’s always really quiet in terms of donations coming in, but this year’s been particularly quiet,” she said.

Community response brings cautious optimism

The call for help has begun to yield results. While a tour of the food bank’s main storage room revealed shelves that would normally hold hundreds of cans now holding only a few dozen, the situation is improving.

McCleary reported a steady stream of donations following the appeal.

“A lot of it has been today. The bell’s been ringing pretty steadily today, folks are dropping it off. So that’s been nice,” she told CTV News. Additional cans have also been moved to the area where volunteer-assembled food hampers are prepared for distribution.

McCleary expressed confidence in the community’s generosity and is hopeful that incoming donations will bridge the gap until the organization’s major annual fundraiser.

“I’m hopeful that the donations that arrive in the near future will last until the non-profit’s Big Blue Food Drive on September 27th,” she said.

Soup a staple and a bellwether for donations

The shortage of soup is critically important to the food bank’s operations, as it is a staple included in every assistance package provided to visitors. The organization distributes approximately 100 cans of soup each week. Fortunately, McCleary confirmed that the shortage has not yet reached a point where they have been unable to provide soup to those in need.

Beyond being a essential item, soup also serves as a key indicator of overall donation levels.

“Soup goes out in every package. So it’s really important that we have some on hand all the time,” McCleary said. “It’s also sort of a barometer of how we’re doing in terms of donations, because soup is sort of everyone’s go-to. So if we’re not getting much in the way of soup, it probably means we’re not getting much of anything else.”

Shortages extend beyond a single item

The current lack of soup is not an isolated issue but part of a broader trend affecting the inventory of several staple goods. McCleary noted that the food bank has been forced to regularly purchase other high-demand items to meet client needs.

“Things like Mr. Noodles, we’ve been having to buy regularly, Kraft Dinner, we’ve been buying regularly. Soup was sort of a special item, just because it’s so rare that we would run out of soup,” she said.

St. Vincent Place maintains a list of perpetually high-demand staples on its website and utilizes its Facebook page to communicate specific, urgent needs to the public during times of critical shortage.
