Northern College breaks ground for new sports dome

Northern College has broken ground on a Timmins sports dome, the city’s first such facility since 1982.

Northern College held a groundbreaking ceremony Friday to officially launch construction of its Timmins Campus Sports Dome.

Officials said snow has protected the ground and is allowing work to get underway.

Partners who’ve contributed to the project, including the province, the municipality and Caisse Alliance, gathered at the site to be the first to break ground.

The facility is expected to boost efforts to recruit and retain professionals to the area. Officials said this will be the first sports facility built in Timmins since 1982.

“There’s a running …walking track, soccer pitches, hard courts for multi-use purposes,” said Kraymr Grenke, president of Northern College’s Board of Governors.

“Whether it’s basketball, volleyball, pickleball, tennis, all of that’s inside and then the clubhouse part, as well.”

Northern College expects the facility to be operational in late 2026 or early 2027.
