Ontario Provincial Police are asking for the public’s help after officers say fireworks were discharged in the direction of pedestrians on Manitoulin Island over the Civic holiday long weekend. The episode unfolded on at about 10 p.m. on Aug. 2 when officers were conducting foot patrols along the Water Street Boardwalk in Little Current. Police said they observed fireworks being set off toward people walking on the boardwalk. “When officers got to the area, they located an individual nearby, and the individual was subsequently [sic] arrested for being intoxicated in a public place,” OPP said in a news release. OPP did not identify the individual taken into custody or indicate whether any additional charges are pending. Appeal for video or photos “The investigation remains ongoing,” OPP said. Police said investigators are still working to determine the circumstances of the incident. Officers are specifically asking for help from anyone who witnessed the event, had fireworks directed at them, or may have captured images or video of the situation unfolding to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously. “OPP thanks the public for their assistance as the investigation continues,” police said to conclude the release. Provincial police have not provided details about any injuries sustained in the incident nor have they disclosed descriptions of any other suspects or confirmed whether additional arrests are expected.
