Félix Roussel won gold ahead of his Canadian teammate Maxime Laoun in the 500-metre event at the Short Track Speed Skating World Tour stop in Montreal on Saturday. The Dutch skaters Teun Boer and Jens van ‘t Wout looked set to take the top two places on the podium, but Van ‘t Wout was too aggressive going into the final bend and both fell. This allowed Roussel and Laoun to claim the top two spots. Italy’s Thomas Nadalini completed the podium. Laoun had finished second in the 500m last weekend, during the World Tour stop in Vancouver. Steven Dubois, the Olympic champion over this distance, and Mathieu Pelletier were relegated to the B final and finished second and third respectively in that race. They finished sixth and seventh in the overall standings. Pelletier finished third in his heat in the semi-final, but his time was not fast enough to secure him a place in the final. Dubois was caught up in a collision right at the start and never regained the pace needed to move up the field sufficiently. Medals were also awarded on Saturday in the men’s 1,500 metres, the women’s 1,000 metres and the women’s 3,000-metre relay. On Sunday, medals will be awarded in the mixed 2,000-metre relay, the men’s 5,000-metre relay, the men’s 1,000 metres, the women’s 500 metres and the women’s 1,500 metres.
