NeeDoh sensory toys go viral on social media

NeeDoh, a line of sensory squishy toys, has gone viral on social media over the past several months.

“I want one, but they are really hard to find,” said 11-year-old Andrii from London.

“I prefer the gummy bear one.”

Maria Greenhalf, a registered psychotherapist at Vanier Children’s Mental Wellness in London, Ont. said fidget toys, like NeeDohs, can be ‘very helpful’ in managing stressful situations for youth.

“When children and youth are feeling anxious, using their hands to squeeze or manipulate the fidget can help them calm down their nervous system,” said Greenhalf.

“There’s also the benefits like improving focus and reducing feelings of overwhelm.”

Greenhalf said incorporating these types of tools into “difficult” or “stressful” situations can help children “center” their emotions.

“It’s about facilitating a process in which children can develop emotional regulation for a lifetime and resilience,” said Greenhalf.

“Although fidget toys support that work, they are not the work itself.”

Greenhalf argued that it is important to keep in mind fidget toys may not be helpful for everyone managing anxiety and that therapy is the most effective resource.

“It is a case-by-case scenario,” said Greenhalf.
