The staff at Victoria’s Government house is polishing the silverware, baby-proofing the premises and cooking up a storm to prepare for the arrival of the Royal Family.
The regal property that usually houses B.C.’s Lieutenant Governor will be locked down tight when William, Kate, George and Charlotte arrive on Saturday.
But on Tuesday, staff gave media a glimpse into the last-minute preparations showing that no touch is too much for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
“There’s lots to be done, but it’s all in preparation for a very, very special time here for us at the house, our province and in some respects, our country,” said Thandi Williams, Director of Operations for Government House.
While Will and Kate tour other parts of B.C. and the Yukon, their children will remain at Government House for the duration of the seven-day trip.
Hosting the Royals does present small challenges – such as making the grounds safe for Prince George, 3, and Princess Charlotte, 1.
“Anything that’s below the waist and in reach of little hands, we want to make sure those things are tucked away and safeguarded if need be,” said Williams. “Making sure there are no hazards or anything of that nature laying about.”
She added staff are putting special touches on the property to make it more welcoming, such as selecting age-appropriate toys for the Prince and Princess.
The family should also feel right at home in the drawing room, which is filled with family photos including Prince William’s grandmother Queen Elizabeth, who has paid multiple visits to Victoria.
Government House’s top chef is preparing to cook a feast fit for a king – or future king – and admitted there may have been certain food requests made.
“I’ve heard rumour from family members that Prince George loves his Bolognese,” said Alex Kornat, who declined to divulge any items on the Royal menu.

But staff did let slip that local treats, possibly including beer, will be stocked at the property.
“We’re talking about a family that is well-travelled and very worldly, and this is our little piece of heaven,” Williams said. “British Columbia is such a special place to so many of us, and all that come to visit as well, so I think it’s really important that we take an opportunity to show off what we have here.”
The Royals arrive in Victoria this Saturday. A full itinerary of their trip can be found here.
