Police officers along with search and rescue volunteers on the South Island proved just how seriously they take every tip for people who could be in need of help.

On Saturday the Juan De Fuca SAR team received a third-hand report of a person stuck with their truck in the snow on a logging road west of Jordan River.

They were told the person in need of help was around the 18 kilometre mark on North Main Road, a popular area for snowmobiling, hiking and cross-country skiing.

After searching well into Sunday afternoon crews didn’t find anyone in distress.

“We are more than happy to rule these things out and we’re thankful when people give us that information,” said Vickie Weber, senior SAR manager. “We felt that the stakes were high so we are more than happy to get a group of volunteers out to go search and see what we can do.”

Eighteen volunteers, including members of the Mid-Island Sno Blazers, helped carry out the lengthy search.

JDF SAR said this is a rare case where a tip didn’t lead to the discovery of a person in need of assistance.
