Police investigating string of copper wire thefts at Cambridge industrial property

Surveillance video shows two people stealing copper and telecommunications wires from a business near Raglin Road in Cambridge.

Waterloo Regional Police are investigating a series of break-and-enters involving the theft of copper and telecommunications wire from a Cambridge industrial property.

Police said officers have responded to multiple incidents since March at a business located in the LG Lovell Industrial Park area.

Investigators allege suspects repeatedly entered a fenced compound and stole copper wire, telecommunications cable and other scrap metal materials.

The latest incident occurred on April 11 at approximately 3:50 a.m., when surveillance cameras captured several individuals entering the rear yard of a business near Raglin Road.

Police said the suspects removed copper wire from storage bins before fleeing the area prior to officers arriving.

Damage was observed to the property’s perimeter fence, and investigators estimate between $200 and $500 worth of copper wire was stolen.

Detectives believe the theft is connected to two earlier break-ins reported on April 4 and April 6.

In those incidents, suspects allegedly gained access to the property through a hole cut in the fence and stole approximately $3,000 worth of telecommunications wire.

According to police, surveillance footage showed the suspects transporting the stolen materials in a wagon before leaving the area on bicycles.

The investigation has also been linked to a March 21 occurrence in which three individuals allegedly entered the same property through damaged fencing and stole roughly $2,000 worth of cable containing copper wire.

Police said the incidents form part of a broader trend involving copper and scrap metal thefts in Cambridge.

The cases are being investigated through an initiative led by Waterloo Regional Police’s South Division Crime Suppression, Analysis and Response Unit, which focuses on prevention, enforcement and education efforts aimed at reducing metal thefts.

Investigators are encouraging business owners to take steps to secure valuable materials, including storing products within locked compounds, ensuring fences and gates are properly maintained, installing surveillance systems and reporting suspicious activity promptly.
