The largest infrastructure project in the City of Victoria has reached a milestone.
In the effort to replace the Johnson Street Bridge, a new pedestrian walkway crossing over Esquimalt Road was installed over the weekend.
Construction on that part of the project started Friday night.
Installation of the pedestrian bridge finished well ahead of schedule.
The city shut down “big blue” to vehicle traffic around 6 p.m. Friday and was supposed to last for 24 hours.
However, crews managed to have the work complete and the road re-opened to drivers by 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
The new walkway may be in place, but it likely won’t open until next year.
The new Johnson Street Bridge is expected to open to traffic in 2017, almost three years behind schedule.
The budget for the project is now over $105 million.
