Investigators have been given a three-month extension as they look into alleged misconduct by Victoria Police Chief Frank Elsner.
In a written statement on Friday, the police complaints commissioner said Elsner’s case warrants an extension of 60 business days, to September 16.
The Police Act instills a six month deadline for misconduct investigations, but extensions are permitted if granted by the commissioner.
Earlier this month Elsner said parts of B.C.’s Police Act that give internal investigators the authority to seize items like electronic devices was “unconstitutional,” and should not apply to him – or anyone else.
Elsner has admitted to sending inappropriate messages to a subordinate officer’s wife – his conduct is under investigation.
He remains suspended, with pay, from the police department.
