They’re fighting fire with fire.
Officials say a controlled burn could cause some public concern as crews battle an aggressive wildfire burning near Port Alberni that grew to 125 hectares overnight.
The Coastal Fire Centre said it would close a service road near the Dog Mountain wildfire to conduct a burn off that “will create a lot of attention,” a spokesperson said Tuesday.
The road was to be closed off at around noon until 10 p.m. if conditions were right.
Thirty-three firefighters and three helicopters are battling the blaze on Dog Mountain, which overlooks Sproat Lake.
Six sprinkler units have also been deployed and approximately 20 water-access-only cabins on the lake remain under evacuation order.
One uninhabited cabin was destroyed in the fire but no one has been injured.
The fire is believed to have been human-caused and was first discovered on Saturday.
