A contaminated soil dump at Shawnigan Lake has been given a clean bill of health from the Ministry of Environment.
Ministry staff said in a statement Friday that the South Island Aggregates site is operating in compliance with its environmental management act permit.
Staff visited the site several times following numerous complaints about contaminated water leaking on to surrounding areas during periods of heavy rain.
Staff took soil samples and said they found no concerns for human health or any environmental impact.
The ministry also reviewed SIA’s response to a request for information about the handling of surface water.
Staff said they will continue to monitor the site and an independent professional will conduct a full review of the company’s water management.
The CVRD and the Shawnigan Residents Association have both argued that the site is a contamination risk to their watershed.
