Demolition of the former Edmonton Remand Centre on 97 Street is expected to be complete later this year, and a parking lot is likely to take its place. A spokesperson for Alberta Infrastructure said planning for the future use of the site is still underway. “In the meantime, part of the site is expected to be used as a parking lot to support nearby government and tenant parking needs,” said the spokesperson in a statement to CTV News Edmonton. Demolition of the 18,500-square-metre building began in 2023. It hasn’t housed inmates since the new Edmonton Remand Centre opened on the city’s north side in 2013. Between 2013 and 2019, the building was used as a training site, temporary weather shelter by Boyle Street Community Services, and as a filming location for film and television projects. The building, constructed in 1979, was decommissioned in 2019.
