The first court date for a man accused of drunk driving causing the death of a West Shore RCMP officer has been delayed again, this time until the new year.
Kenneth Jacob Fenton was originally slated to appear in Colwood provincial court at the end of September on charges of impaired driving causing death, dangerous driving causing death and flight from police causing death in the April 5 crash that killed Const. Sarah Beckett.
That was pushed back to Oct. 27 for undisclosed reasons, and then the case was again adjourned to Nov. 24 so Fenton’s legal team could review Crown’s case.
But CTV News has learned that after a request by defense counsel, Fenton’s arraignment hearing has been held back again until Jan. 5, 2017.
Beckett, 32, was killed when her police cruiser was struck in the intersection of Peatt Road and Goldstream Avenue in April.
Fenton was taken into custody at the scene, but he was released the next day.
He was again taken into custody after charges were laid in September, but released that night on a promise to appear in court under conditions including no alcohol or drugs.
He must also report to a bail supervisor, remain in B.C. and surrender his passport.
