City staff in Victoria hope councillors will endorse a plan this week to make some changes in Reeson Park.

The half-acre waterfront park, located at the intersection of Yates Street and Wharf Street, is the only publicly owned greenspace at the Inner Harbour.

The City has prepared a park improvement plan, based on community feedback, that includes seating terraces, a sloping grass area and public art.

According to staff, feedback on the current park indicated that many people feel unsafe and unwelcome in Reeson Park, and respondents indicated that future renovations should increase safety and create an appealing destination.

The pitch also seeks council approval to construct a new section of the David Foster Harbour Pathway through the park.

The city projects up to a dozen people currently camp at Reeson Park every night.

Survey respondents were concerned that future renovations will result in the campers being displaced.

The work is estimated at almost $400,000 and construction could start this summer.

Councillors are expected to discuss the pitch on Thursday.
