Child, 9, dies after single-vehicle crash in Shawnigan Lake

A child has died after the vehicle they were travelling in hit a hydro pole in Shawnigan Lake on Sunday.

RCMP responded to the serious single-vehicle collision on Shawnigan Lake Road near Sooke Lake Road at 8 a.m.

According to police, a nine-year-old passenger was seriously hurt and died from their injuries.

The 49-year-old driver suffered minor injuries.

Police say the vehicle was travelling north bound when it lost control and struck a hydro pole. 

Speed may have been a factor in the crash, officials say.

The investigation is ongoing.
