A prosecutor has stayed charges against a 20-year-old man in a disturbing case of alleged cat abuse in Duncan last year.

Video surfaced last year showing a cat being shaved and drugged in the city, leading to an RCMP investigation.

The cat was allegedly given MDMA, shaved, bleached and thrown out of a window, according to its owners.

The animal was eventually tracked down by a Good Samaritan and reunited with the family. A veterinarian later confirmed its blood tested positive for MDMA.

Mounties arrested the man as well as a 17-year-old boy and 16-year-old girl, charging them all with causing an animal to suffer.

The prosecution made the decision to stay the charges against the adult male after reviewing its evidence, saying it would not meet a charge approval standard.

The two teenagers still face charges in the incident.
