A Victoria father has been murdered in Mexico and another Canadian man has been arrested in the death, CTV News has learned.

A source close to the investigation says Canada’s Global Affairs department has informed a Victoria family of four their father was murdered in Mexico.

According to the source, 48-year-old Victoria man Roger Corbett was the victim.

Global Affairs confirmed that a Canadian man was murdered in Mexico, and said consular services were being provided to the victim’s family, the man arrested in Mexico and his family.

“We offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the Canadian citizen who has been murdered in Mexico,” Global Affairs said in a statement.

An unconfirmed report from a Mexican newspaper says the incident happened Sunday at a house in Chicxulub, a small town on the Yucatan Peninsula about 320 kilometres west of Cancun.

The Yucatan Times article says an argument turned violent when one of the men involved grabbed a kitchen knife and attacked the other man.

It says the man then walked to a nearby shop and told a clerk he attacked his friend, and worried he’d killed him.

An image from the newspaper shows police surrounding a shirtless man, alleged to be the Canadian who was arrested Sunday.

CTV News has not confirmed any of those details.

Consular officials are in contact with local authorities to get additional information about what happened, Global Affairs said.
