Future of Calgary’s free fare zone up for council vote

The fate of Calgary Transit's free fare zone in the downtown core will come down to a vote at city council on May 26, 2026.

City council will decide the fate of Calgary’s downtown CTrain free fare zone on Tuesday.

Earlier this month, a committee voted 7-4 to scrap the 45-year-old program, but some councillors now think growing public pushback could change the outcome.

Several councillors say they’ve been flooded with feedback from Calgarians who want the free rides to stay.

Mayor Jeromy Farkas has also spoken against removing the free fare zone, saying he’s not convinced the city would see the projected revenue increase.

City administration estimates ending the program could bring in about five million dollars a year for transit. Officials also argue adding fares could help improve safety and reduce public disorder on the trains.

Those opposed to the change say there’s little evidence it would actually reduce crime.

They also warn charging four dollars to travel just a few downtown blocks could hurt businesses, tourism, and major events.

The free fare zone stretches along 7 Avenue from City Hall Station to Downtown West-Kerby Station.

If council votes to end the free fare zone, riders will start paying to use that downtown stretch of track beginning Aug. 1.
