The City of Calgary is looking for a new partner to support the Free Fare Zone, a section of the CTrain that’s an important mobility option for thousands of residents. The zone, which is in effect from Downtown West/Kerby and City Hall/Bow Valley College stations, allows riders to use the LRT without paying for the service. Up until last year, TD Canada sponsored the route, but the city says it needs a new organization to come forward and pick up the baton. “Calgary Transit is exploring whether there is interest in a naming rights partnership that creates value for both Calgary Transit and a future sponsor,” said Sharon Fleming, director of Calgary Transit, in a news release. “This process will help us better understand what opportunities may exist while continuing to support the important role the Free Fare Zone plays in downtown mobility.” The city says the opportunity will give the sponsor “a prominent presence” along the busy transit corridor. Ward 1 Coun. Kim Tyers said Calgarians want to maintain the critical part of the Calgary Transit network and a corporate sponsor would ensure its longevity. “I advocated for continuing the search for a corporate sponsor to secure its long-term viability, offering local businesses a direct way to invest in Calgary’s growth, tourism and event economy,” Tyers said. The deadline for applications from interested parties is scheduled for mid-October.
