The leader of one of Alberta’s pro-independence political parties has resigned. Cameron Davies announced in a letter on Friday that he would be leaving the party. “In the aftermath of the ‘referendum to have a referendum,’ it is time for new leadership, new voices, and new talents to emerge,” Davies wrote in his letter. “This movement has never been about one individual. It has always been about Albertans who refuse to accept the status quo and insist on putting Alberta first.” Davies’s message comes nearly two weeks after 75 per cent of voters in Alberta’s historic referendum voted to remain in Canada over holding a second, binding referendum that could see the province become independent. Davies said his resignation “does not mean my departure from the fight,” and that he will continue supporting the separation movement and “work to organize Alberta First groups across the province ahead of the next provincial election.” The Republican Party of Alberta — which was then known as the Buffalo Party of Alberta — received a total of 106 votes in the 2023 provincial election, according to Elections Alberta data. The party was formed in 2022.
