Calgary firefighters were treated to a special lunch from the Japanese consulate Friday. Each Japanese-style curry meal was crafted by the consulate’s chef -- and served to staff at fire department headquarters. The event was meant to promote Japanese cuisine and to continue ongoing outreach and relationship-building with fire service. “We like to express our deep gratitude to the public service, like a fire service and the police service, because our very important mission is to make sure the the safety and well-being of Japanese local residents, also the visitors from Japan,” said Japanese Consul General Takehiko Wajma. “Many people know like sushi, tempura, teriyaki, but yeah, maybe many people know about curry rice too. But yeah, so we want to introduce more kind of comfort food from Japan,” said consulate chef Keisuke Oyama. “The opportunity to share food is always a great way of building relationships, and that’s what today is about,” said Calgary fire chief Steve Dongworth. A similar meal was recently served by the Japanese consulate to the police service.
