Parks Canada issued a bear warning on Wednesday for places in the Skoki Valley area of Banff National Park after a grizzly bear was seen in a close encounter with a hiker and their dog. Skoki Lodge, Hidden Lake, Merlin Meadows, Baker Lake, Red Deer Lake, Deception Pass and Cotton Grass Pass are all included in the warning. Park visitors are reminded to exercise extra caution on fall hikes as bears in the area are focused on preparing for winter. They say it’s important to make noise, carry bear spray in an easily accessible pocket and know how to use it. They also say think about leaving dogs at home. If you do bring a dog, always keep them on a leash. Anyone encountering a bear is advised to stay calm, give the animal space and consider leaving the area. Don’t run or drop your backpack.
