A homicide investigation is underway into a suspicious death connected to a fire in northeast Calgary Thursday afternoon. Fire crews responded to the 200 block of 27 Avenue N.E. just before 12:20 p.m. for reports of a structure fire. They noted light smoke coming from the back of the home and the basement, said Calgary Fire Department public information officer Alex Kwan. Crews stretched a hose line and were able to enter through the back of the home and made their way downstairs, where they knocked down the fire. Kwan said that during a search of the basement, they located the victim and tried to start a rescue but ultimately confirmed the victim was dead. No other injuries were reported. Crews were able to contain the fire, limiting the damage to the house of origin, Kwan said. An autopsy is expected to take place Friday.
