Thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds sweep across Central Ontario

If you’re planning to go outside this morning, it might be a good idea to take an umbrella with you.

A special weather statement remains in effect across parts of Simcoe County as strong winds, heavy rain and thunderstorms move through the region early Thursday morning.

Environment Canada says that wind gusts reaching up to 70 kilometres an hour are currently in effect, with the potential for even stronger gusts during thunderstorms.

Rainfall amounts of five to 10 millimetres are expected Thursday.

This weather statement covers Barrie, Collingwood and Hillsdale, Newmarket, Georgina and northern York Region, Orangeville, Grand Valley and southern Dufferin County, as well as Innisfil, New Tecumseth and Angus.

The national weather agency states showers and thunderstorms are expected to taper off later Thursday morning as the weather system moves east.

Strong winds could gradually ease through the day, although breezy conditions may continue, says forecasters.

Tonight is expected to bring better conditions. Skies will remain mostly cloudy with a 40 per cent chance of showers before clearing overnight.

This alert comes after fluctuating weather conditions over the past few days, which led the national weather agency to issue various watches and warnings.
