Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says a thunderstorm warning is in affect for Simcoe and Muskoka, a tornado is possible and residents could even see hail as large as ping pong balls. For Simcoe residents, the first heat event of the season is also expected to take place Tuesday, said the weather agency in its advisory. In the Simcoe area, day time highs are expected to reach 28 degrees with humidex values near 33, according to the ECCC. Environment Canada says wind speeds could reach as fast as 110 kilometres per hour in the afternoon or evening hours. Conditions are expected to be similar Muskoka, with showers starting in the late afternoon. Muskoka residents could also experience wind speeds of 90 to 110 kilometres per hour, according to ECCC. Day time highs in Muskoka are estimated to reach 27 degrees with a humidex value of 32. In Simcoe, the UV index is reported at seven and in Muskoka the UV index reported at eight. ECCC warns residents to be cautious in high wind speed settings and be aware of signs of heat illness. “When thunder roars, go indoors! Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year,” the ECCC says in its thunderstorm warning statement, adding that injuries are possible due to flying debris or falling hail. “Watch for the early signs of heat exhaustion in yourself and others,” the weather organization adds in its advisory. “Signs may include headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine and intense fatigue. Stop your activity and drink water,” the ECCC says.
