A transport truck crossed the centre median on Highway 401 in eastern Ontario and struck a car, killing the driver of the vehicle, according to police. Ontario Provincial Police continue to investigate the two-vehicle crash in the westbound lanes of the highway between Gananoque and the Thousand Islands Bridge around 10 p.m. Wednesday. Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Erin Cranton tells CTV News Ottawa the investigation shows a transport truck travelling eastbound on Highway 401 crossed the grassy centre median and struck a vehicle in the westbound lanes. The lone person in the car was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Cranton. “We are working with the coroner’s office to determine the identity of the deceased,” Cranton said. Two people in the transport truck were transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Jacob Casselman says he was driving home with his family when he witnessed the events. “There was a transport in the passing lane, and all of a sudden he swerved through the grass median, flipped on its side. And then slid into oncoming traffic,” Casselman said. “All the lights went off on the transport, and the cars were coming from the other direction.” Casselman says the incident was jarring to witness. “I’ve never seen something like that happen right in front of my eyes,” he said. “My daughters were shaken up, and we were all sort of shaken up.” Police are asking anyone with information or dashcam footage of the collision to contact the Leeds County OPP at 1-888-310-1122. The westbound lanes of Hwy. 401 were closed between Reynolds Road in Leeds and the Thousand Islands and Highway 2 in Gananoque while police investigated the crash. The westbound lanes fully reopened to traffic at 12:30 p.m. The eastbound lanes of the highway were initially closed as part of the investigation, but reopened at 3:45 a.m. With files from CTV’s Dylan Dyson
