A farmer on Prince Edward Island has discovered another possible explosive device. For the second time this week, officers with the East Prince RCMP were called to a North Bedeque property after a potato harvester picked up another suspected mortar from a field in Slemon Park. Police responded to the farm Wednesday around 6:30 p.m. Officers once again contacted the Department of National Defence (DND) to deal with the ordnance. RCMP had responded to the same property the day prior after a what appeared to be a mortar was discovered while unloading potatoes. According to police, both ordnances were collected from a field that used to be part of the military base in Slemon Park. The base was decommissioned in the late 1980s and early 1990s. “This field has been in farm use for many years since the decommissioning and was rented this year by the farmer who uncovered the two ordnances,” police said in a news release Thursday. “If you encounter anything that appears to be an explosive do not touch it, move a safe distance away and call the police.” For more P.E.I. news, visit our dedicated provincial page.
