Motorists in Halifax will have a new obstacle to face as a busy intersection in the city is set to temporarily close. Starting Wednesday, the intersection of Bayers Road and Oxford Street will be closed for almost a month as part of Phase 2 of the Bayers Road Transit Priority Corridor project. The city says the closure is required to install an upgraded water transmission main beneath the intersection. The main provides water service to the north end of the peninsula. According to a news release Friday, traffic impacts are expected throughout the duration of the project as the intersection will be closed in all directions. Some sections of sidewalk or crosswalks may also be temporarily closed as work progresses. Outbound vehicles will follow a marked detour around the section of Bayers Road between Windsor Street and Connaught Avenue, which is the same route as the existing inbound detour from when Bayer’s Road was reduced to one lane at the start of Phase 2 of the project. Bayers Road will be open to two-way local traffic on either side of the intersection while the work is ongoing. HRM expects Bayers Road, between Windsor Street and Connolly Street, will reopen to one-way outbound traffic beginning Nov. 12. Bayers Road will remain open for inbound traffic for local residents and business access only. Full two-way traffic on Bayers Road is expected to be restored on Dec. 17.
