A New Brunswick man has been sentenced to prison in the United States for participating in a “grandparent scam.” Paul Conneh, of Moncton, pleaded guilty to conspiring to commit wire fraud and conspiring to launder monetary instruments in connection with the grandparent scam in May, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Vermont. On Tuesday, Conneh was sentenced to serve 33 months in prison and ordered to pay $256,000 in restitution to the victims of the offense. “According to court records, Conneh participated in the grandparent scam by recruiting “bail bondsmen” to travel to the United States, laundering the money they took from elderly Americans, and distributing the money to co-conspirators,” reads the release. “Conneh participated in the grandparent scam for three weeks during July and August 2023, victimizing approximately 20 elderly Americans.” Conneh was arrested in Costa Rica on Jan. 23, 2025, and extradited to the United States.
