The New Brunswick RCMP says a suspect has been arrested after shots were fired in Moncton, N.B., Thursday morning. The RCMP responded to a report of shots fired on St. George Street around 8:08 a.m. “During the response, police were confronted with a suspect who was armed, and fired shots towards police,” reads an email to CTV News from the Codiac Regional RCMP. “As the situation evolved, members discharged their firearms towards the suspect.” The RCMP says no officers were injured. The suspect was arrested and taken to hospital for assessment. There were roughly a dozen officers on scene, including several detectives, a dog team and a drone operator. Kennebecasis Regional Police vehicles were also at the scene. Edith Cavell School, a nearby elementary school, enacted lockdown procedures around 8 a.m. “due to a police operation in the area,” according to a statement from the Anglophone East School District. “It was lifted just after 8:30 when the RCMP confirmed the operation had concluded,” said Stephanie Patterson, director of communications for the school district. Police say there is no further risk to the public and officers are remaining in the area as part of their investigation. The Codiac Regional RCMP has referred the incident to SiRT. Residents say they heard several gunshots Dale Hazen lives in the building next to where two vehicles had their windows shot out. “I was having a shower around 8:00 when I heard several gunshots. When I finally got showered and dressed, I went to look out the patio door and by that time the RCMP were taping off everything,” he says. “When I came out around 10:00, I noticed there were car windows shot out in the back parking lot.” Hazen says it was a very scary situation. “Moncton is getting worse instead of better,” he says. Rheal Hebert lives across the parking lot from where the shooting took place. “I was going out for a walk with my dog,” said Hebert. “I heard gunshots, quite a few.
