A 24-year-old woman was struck by a vehicle in a Comox Valley crosswalk in the region’s fourth such collision this week.

The woman was crossing Ryan Road at the Old Island Highway in Courtenay around 7:15 a.m. Tuesday when she was struck by a white GMC, according to police.

Paramedics rushed her to hospital where she remained in critical condition, Const. Rob Gardner said.

The driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with police.

It’s the fourth time a vehicle has struck somebody in the last three days.

The string of crashes started Sunday night, when a 92-year-old man was struck in a crosswalk in Comox and later died from his injuries.

A skateboarder and a cyclist have also been struck in recent days.

Gardner urged both drivers and pedestrians to look out for each other.

“We’re reminding drivers to just make sure that you’re watching your surroundings before you enter into an intersection, make sure there are no pedestrians there,” he said.

As for pedestrians, “Don’t always assume that because you’re in a crosswalk they’re going to [stop],” Gardner said.

“Take that extra second, make eye contact with them, be cognizant of your surroundings and just make sure that you’re safe when you cross the road.”

The RCMP’s Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction unit is investigating the latest crash along with Comox Valley RCMP.
