Two teenagers were airlifted to hospital on Friday after they were hit by a vehicle while attempting to cross the Island Highway.

The crash happened at Mostar Road around 10:30 p.m.

After speaking to witnesses police said it looks as though four teens were trying to run or walk across the crosswalk against the red light.

A vehicle was travelling northbound when it hit two of the teens.

The 15-year-old girl was airlifted to Victoria General Hospital while the 17-year-old boy was airlifted to British Columbia Children’s Hospital in Vancouver.

Police said both victims sustained critical injuries.

The teens are foreign exchange students enrolled in the Nanaimo-Ladysmith School District.

The 56-year-old man driving the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with officers, according to Nanaimo RCMP.

Drugs and alcohol have been ruled out as contributing factors, police say.

The intersection was closed for several hours as investigators examined the scene.

According to police, the roads were wet and slippery at the time of the crash.

A mechanical inspection will be conducted on the vehicle.

The accident comes one day after Mounties confirmed a 16-year-old girl died from her injuries after she jaywalked across the same highway last month.

Anyone who witnessed Friday's crash is asked to contact Nanaimo RCMP at (250) 754-2345.
