A teen girl struck by a vehicle as she jaywalked across a Nanaimo highway last month has died from her injuries, according to police.

The 16-year-old girl was crossing the Island Highway at Mary Ellen Drive on Sept. 21 against a red light when she was struck by a pick-up truck that was unable to stop in time, Nanaimo RCMP said.

Witnesses reported seeing her thrown in the air approximately 60 feet before landing in a northeast crosswalk.

A friend pulled her off the highway immediately and witnesses stopped to provide first aid until paramedics arrived, rushing her to hospital.

Nanaimo RCMP confirmed Friday the girl had died from her injuries.

Victim services is assisting the driver of the pick-up and witnesses who saw the crash, and the investigation has been turned over to BC Coroners Service.

The girl has not been publicly identified.
