A 28-year-old Port Alberni man died from serious injuries sustained in a single-vehicle crash that was discovered early Monday morning.

The man was driving with his dog in the 5600-block of Kitsuksis Road when he left the road and struck a tree, according to RCMP.

First responders were called to the scene at 5:46 a.m. and by the time fire crews were able to pull the man out of the wreckage, he had succumbed to his injuries.

The man’s dog was seriously injured and was rushed to a veterinarian for treatment.

RCMP said in a news release that a victim services unit was assisting the victim’s family.

The road was shut down for a few hours while a collision reconstructionist and coroner investigated the cause of the crash, which has not yet been determined.

It’s also unclear exactly when the crash occurred.

Police are now asking anyone who may have seen the man’s vehicle, a green 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe, in the hours preceding the collision to contact them at 250-723-2424.
