A five-year-old boy was rushed to hospital Tuesday afternoon after he didn’t resurface while swimming in a backyard pool in Saanich.

Police say they responded to a report of an unresponsive boy shortly after 3 p.m. in the 4300-block of Lochside Drive.

According to officials, the boy who was a guest at the home, didn’t resurface after going down a slide into the pool.

Fortunately the swimming pool was being monitored by adults, who noticed the child didn’t come back up.

An off-duty Victoria firefighter was also at the home and performed first-aid on the five-year-old.

The child became semi-conscious a short while later and was rushed to hospital.

Police say they believe he is conscious and are hoping for a full recovery.

They are reminding parents to keep a close eye on their children when playing on beaches or near pools.
